Debrief – Venice

“I have a plan. Okay first, I’m going to sit next to MJ on the flight. Second, I’m going to buy a dual headphone adapter. And watch movies with her the whole time. Three, when we go to Venice, Venice is super famous for making stuff out of glass, right?” ― Peter Parker

I am glad that we managed to figure out this side quest and work it into our Italy trip. We split our time in Rome and Prosecco Road with a quick day trip to Venice. Which we were glad to visit before it sinks into the sea.

Venice is a place that almost seems like fantasy. A floating city built 700 years ago? Off the coast of Italy? Ridiculous. But its real and I highly recommend visiting.

Now, if you intend to spend several days visiting museums and sights go for it… If you only have a handful of hours here’s how we spent our time.

Get there bright and early. Enjoy the train ride from wherever you’re going from and get there in time to avoid the masses heading for McDonalds to get their American breakfast. The benefit of this place is no vehicles, bikes, scooters, anything will impede your transit. You use your legs and walk to where you need to be. A novel idea and so much fun navigating through windy dark alleys.

Once you arrive get out of the station and head left until the crowds evaporate and you find yourself alone in the early morning in the historic Ghetto Ebraico. Cross one more bridge and make your way to Torrefazione Cannaregio for a coffee, a pastry, and a patio seat to people-watch and help prepare you for a lot more walking.

From here we went to all the one-off landmarks away from the main tourist traps. It allowed us to avoid crowds and let us feel that we were alone in the city.

Piazza San Marco

If you have the fortitude you could walk the multiple islands and loop over to Piazza San Marco but if you ever feel overwhelmed catch a water bus or water taxi that makes frequent stops all around the city. We started to get turned around and jumped on a water bus to help get us closer to the city center.

Webster’s Dictionary defines Piazza San Marco as a tourist trap. I believe that it is important to visit and observe the cultural significance of.. well… I mean it’s a cool square. The clock tower with the intricate designs is a marvel. I recommend taking your visit and moving on to the other landmarks.

There are so many different ways to enjoy Venice we definitely missed some things and I would love to visit the museums but for the time that we had we felt that we experienced the city. On the next visit we will make sure to stick around for a few days and enjoy the night-time strolls when the crowds have left and the city can breathe.

Go check out my Gallery for even more shots of this magical city.

Cheers Y’all,
Will
